The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA) publishes a DUI manual entitled “The Visual Detection Of DWI Motorists.
The publication contains a “DWI Detection Guide” with purported percentages of the probability that a motorist is under the influence where one or more “driving cues” such as “weaving” are observed. It has a list of 24 “driving cues” for officers to consider when deciding whether to make a traffic stop on a motor vehicle.
For more information, see Chapter 2, “Detection and Evaluation,” in the California Highway Patrol, Driving Under the Influence Enforcement Manual (HPM 70.4), 7/00 ed., page 2-2—Note that the list of driving behaviors in this publication does not show percentages of probability as to whether a motorist is under the influence based on various driving observations.
